Getting Around Downtown STL just got a lot easier for pedestrians!
Last week, CityArchRiver project partners opened Luther Ely Smith Square, which includes the Park Over the Highway part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial!
The park is located east of the Old Courthouse and joins the area with a new land bridge over Interstate 44, allowing pedestrians walking on Memorial to cross through the park at Chestnut and Market Streets to head straight to Walnut to access the Arch Grounds.
Construction on the Luther Ely Smith Square began in December 2014 and now boasts over 220 trees, 300 feet of benches, and hundreds of shrubs and perennials. The Square was redesigned so that it may become a gathering spot for visitors and workers to Downtown. A temporary viewing platform has also been installed so visitors to the Square can watch the museum renovation and visitor’s center construction.
Getting Around Downtown STL is a collaboration between CityArchRiver, Downtown STL, Inc., MoDOT St. Louis and The Gateway Arch. We hope you enjoy our neighborhood’s newest park!
